Broken window glass is a common household issue. Accidents can happen anytime and what worse is that you can’t control them. If we talk about the aluminum windows, they are easy to work on when the window glass breaks. Replacing broken glass might seem to be tricky but it is easier than you might think. You may also get in touch with a company that will help you with window replacement & installation services.
However, if you are planning to do the replacement on your own, we have some useful information for you. Most aluminum windows come with several parts including silicon seal, glass, and pieces of the aluminum frame. And you require a few screws to set up the windows. To do the replacement, you just have to find these screws and unscrew the window to remove the old glass pane and install the new one.
Here are the steps that will help you in easy glass replacement in aluminum windows in your home.
Remove the Window Frame
Before you put a new glass, you must remove the old broken one. And to do that, you will have to remove the aluminum frame from the window. There is a simple procedure that you will have to follow. Find out where it is held in place. Loosen the screws one by one until you can lift the frame with the glass seal in it. Do not bend the frame pieces while pulling or prying.
Remove the Glass
Put the aluminum window frame on a table. While handling the glass, don’t forget to wear gloves and safety glasses. You will see that there are screws on all the corners of the window frame. Loosening the screws must be done diagonally. When you loosen the screw on one side, do it on the other side also. You will also have to hold the window so that one of the corners extends easily over the side of the table. With the help of a rubber mallet, tap the frame lightly and take it away from the glass. After you are done with one side, turn the window to the opposite corner and repeat the procedure. Once the frame is loosened, pull out the glass easily.
Prepare the New Glass
You will now have to prepare the new glass before installation. Measure the dimensions of the old glass in both directions. Don’t forget to consider the thickness of the glass so that it properly fits into the frame. After you are done with the measurements, go to the market to purchase a new glass of the required thickness, and get it cut according to the measurements.
Remove the Rubber
While you are working with your removed window frame, you will find that there is a rim of rubber around the old glass that fits perfectly into the window frame. You are required to ease it off the old glass and fit on the new glass. Make sure that you clean the rubber so as to remove all the small glass pieces from the rubber.
Adjust the New Frame
Place the new glass panel on a flat surface. Before doing so, make sure that the glass is bigger than the surface so that the two sides of the glass hangover. Place the rubber on the two sides and put one half of the pane in the frame. Tighten the glass by gently tapping with the rubber mallet. Repeat the same procedure on the other side of the frame as well. And now, you just have to position the aluminum frame back in the window. Be careful and hold it firmly while you are screwing the frame back in place.
